Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. After World War I, It was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action.
The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in ancient greece. The Athenian leader Periclese offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian war, saying "Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial to them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men."
The National Moment of Remembrence, 3 pm on Memorial Day, was established by Congress. It asks Americans wherever they are on Memorial Day to pause in an act of national unity for one minute.
It is on this day that we at O of A take pride in honoring those who have fallen before us and those who will fall after us. With pride we offer the highest respect those who give their life to freedom, and we ask all O of A readers to join us in honor of the moment of rememberance.
Thank you,
Scincerely,
From the O of A staff
